Day 12 of #ultimateyou30daychallenge

And once again I did this part days ago, but only getting around to blogging it now. 🙂

 

Day 12 as to Block out light at night.

My first response to this was, doesn’t that happen automatically when you close your eyes?

Although that does have an impact, it’s limited, especially when hubby insists on watching his walker in bed.  The sound I can deal with, especially if it’s at the right level to become white noise, I can fall asleep nicely to that.  Nope, it’s the flashing lights that I cannot handle.  Whenever there is a scene change, especially between night and day, the changes in light bounce off my eyelids and worse cause scenario cause a mini light show in my head.  It reminds me of that one advert you see on some DVD rentals, when the kid watches a movie that isn’t age appropriate and then he has the screen flashing on his face when he goes to sleep?  Sorry, I tried to find it online, but couldn’t.

 

Here’s the real reason you should block out light though =

A hormone called melatonin plays a very important role in regulating our internal sleep-wake clock called the circadian rhythm. When we are exposed to bright light (particularly blue light from electronics, LED bulbs, etc) our brains interpret it to mean that it’s daytime so melatonin production gets suppressed.

This means with light exposure at night it becomes harder and takes longer for us to fall asleep. Some people are more sensitive to this than others, but in general light exposure can affect both the quality and quantity of our sleep

So, did I do this properly?  Considering I have been falling asleep on the couch because it’s been ridiculously hot and my tolerance for my husband’s snoring is at an all time low, the short answer is NO.

Will I do it in the future?  Probably not, and mostly because I prefer to have outside lights on so I can see what’s going on when I hear funny noises or one of my boys wake up.

Give it a try though, might work for you?
